God’s people had just won a decisive victory over their enemies, the Philistines, causing them to fall before His people. Then the prophet Samuel did something to commemorate the powerful victory and deliverance of God’s people. He took a stone and set it up and called its name “Ebenezer” saying “thus far the LORD has helped us.”
He wanted the people to remember the mighty hand of God in saving His people. These words not only showed their gratitude to the LORD who had delivered them in the past, but an expectation that He will help in the future. The God who has helped us “thus far” is the same God who will help us in the future.
Remember the past victories God has given. Remember how He saved you and delivered you in times past and you will be encouraged to know that He will save you and deliver you in times present and times future.
