Receiving the Word of God

“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe”. - 1 Thessalonians 2:13

God speaks to us through many means such as preaching, teachings, messages, reading the Word of God, spiritual songs, etc. More often though, we are judgmental of the things that are spoken or taught from the Word of God. We have taken a liking in passing judgment on the speaker of the Word rather than molding our character as per the wishes of our Christ.

This attitude is the offspring of self-righteousness and pride. The Thessalonians gladly received the word of God as it were in truth and not as though it were of men. This is exactly how we should receive the truths that are spoken to us from the Word. We should always remember that the people who preach or teach the Word of God are mere messengers who have submitted themselves to the Lord as instruments to be used by Him.

We are to listen to whatever the Spirit wants to say through them. Focus not on the speaker, rather focus on the One who speaks through them, and lead our lives as per what he teaches us.

Ask God and He will give you the power through the Spirit to discern if what is being spoken is of manly knowledge or through the Wisdom of God.
